I'm always happy to help out if I can, and if you have a question I'm sure others have had the same.

Thomas, Supposedly it does. I've actually heard of people that plant right away. They cut out the sod at just the spot where they are putting the plants and let the mulch kill the rest. If you are seeding, spread an inch or so of compost over the top and seed into that. Just make sure your first layer over the sod is a good smothering layer like cardboard or newspaper.Daphne Gouldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17305049560953735881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3698134075709295915.post-31548071505719740902009-12-02T22:51:01.253-05:002009-12-02T22:51:01.253-05:00Great piece, Daphne! There's so much great stuff here.

I still have to remove the grass from the remaining half of my garden...maybe I'll try the lasagna method in the spring...but it only takes a month? Maybe I should have gone the other way. But you are right. I do always plan my garden with crop rotation in mind.

Jane, I'm surprised there is a right and wrong time to plant. I've been in the islands both in summer and winter and found it to be nice both times (but really windy in the winter).

miss m, last year was my first year blogging. I started my Maui garden in June 08 and I'm finally getting a grasp of the right and wrong times to plant in the hot and dry area where I live - the planting times are very different even from other areas on the island. I have about 10 eggplants that I started from seed last December. I'm told they will fruit in our climate for at least 2years and sometimes up to 4 years.

I cut them back significantly at the end of August and they regrew within a month - I had a ready to pick eggplant at Thanksgiving - I was so surprised!
