When Life Gives You Blizzards . . .

Go skiing. So I did. I might not be able to dig in my garden but I can still have fun. Three of us took an hour off from work and skied yesterday and again today. The weather was in the 30s. The sky was blue. It was so pretty. We went to the Minute Man National Park which is quite close. Their first parking lot was closed off, but the Paul Revere Capture Site was plowed out so we parked there and skied on Old Battle Road to the Hartwell Tavern. In the summer we bike there. In the winter if we have snow it is great for skiing.

DH skiing away from me into the blue sky.

Captain William Smith's house is on the path and is an historic old saltbox. It is used as a campsite for some of the reenactments around Patriot's Day.

  1. What a great outing. Looks like a very scenic trail. I have been wanting to get cross country ski's for a few seasons now. Great exercise during the winter and a free trail is all the better!

  2. Good for you, Daphne! If you can't beat it, join it- the weather I mean. That second shot is beautiful- looks like something out of a movie. The sky is such a beautiful blue!

  4. What lovely winter scenes. I suppose we should embrace the last of winter until we finally see some signs of spring. We're going to do some sledding tomorrow... not the motorized form of "sledding," but the good 'ol whooshing down the hill kind of sledding.

  5. Dan, I love to xc ski. I've always had skis since I grew up with them. When I met my husband, he taught me to downhill ski (which I never do any more) and I taught him to xc ski. Downhill skiing: "The lift tickets cost HOW MUCH? Are we at the front of the line yet? Oh #@%$# it's freezing on the chairlift. Finally the top of the hill. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. PLUFF Don't worry I only look like a pretzel. I think I can get up. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH Is the line longer than before? My &@%# toes are going to freeze off. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH. . . . " XC Skiing: "Swoosh. Swoosh." Peace and serenity. Can you tell I like XC skiing better? It's hiking with a little more speed. And we do pay for it occasionally. We like Great Brook Farm. They charge $12 to go skiing on the weekends, but they groom the trails too. So if the snow has iced up, it is a nice place to go.

Annie's Granny, Well that is the joy of skiing. It's something that can be done in the cold. We will get a warm up today so it is probably the last of the really cold (at least I'm hoping).

Tessa, It was just beautiful and since it was during the week, barely anyone was there. I think we saw only three other people on the trail. And when it really looks like a set of a movie is when all the people are decked out for the reenactments. All summer long on the weekends you can find people dressed up from the 1700s. There are redcoats occasionally walking the trails. Also at Hartwell Tavern (another historic soapbox house kept up as in the old days) people all dressed up telling you what their job was and showing you how they did it. The have a nice little herb garden there too.

    Catherine, Thanks

Liisa, that sounds like a lot of fun. We used to do that when the kids were around. That is the joy of kids, you think about things like that. Now I only think of sledding.

  6. Those pictures are gorgeous. I've never skied in my life and have always been convinced that I'd kill myself if I tried the downhill variety. But the cross-country type looks a lot safer and more fun.

  7. Oh Daphne, what a beautiful trail. It looks like a tree tunnel, how fun. The sky is so very blue and Captain Smith's house charming. Thanks for showing us!
