This and That

I haven't had much time to write so I'll do a quick post on what has been going on. The first is that we finally got our fence in. I can't wait to have a rose growing over the arbor.

The second is that we had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had way too much food. Everyone brought enough to feed at least twice as many as themselves and that means the tables were still full when we were done. My son made two dishes this year so I didn't make as much as usual. I did decide that I needed to bring Asian greens so I made a salad with them. Also from the garden were my pickles. And I brought a lox plate. The lox were on a bed of my red lettuce. I also had red onions, Cherokee Purple tomatoes, and pickled serranos as sides to the lox - all from the garden. It was one of the few dishes that was actually finished at the meal. But that was because it was an appetizer and people hadn't stuffed themselves yet. I swear I meant to take photos. But alas I don't even have photos of the Asian green harvest.

Then I noticed yesterday my garlic is coming up.

This I could take photos of as I wasn't rushed.

I suppose I could give you more garlic photos, but really, do you need 20 of them? I think not.

My garden catalogs have started arriving, but so far no Pinetree or Fedco catalog. I hope they come soon.

I hope those of you who celebrate it had a great Thanksgiving.

  1. I'm glad you had a good Thanksgiving. There never is time to take pictures, totally understandable. The sight of your garlic is making me want to go out and see if I have sprouts. I got the Pinetree catalog last week, but no Fedco yet.

  4. I hope everyone was suitably amazed at having homegrown tomatoes at Thanksgiving! My garlic is also just starting to sprout, it's interesting to see how some varieties are fully sprouted and well on their way and others haven't emerged at all yet. Maybe I'll have to keep track of that for a while. It's also interesting that I received my Pinetree catalog at least a week ago...

  5. My garlic just started coming up also. It's too soon to do a count and see if all are sprouting.

I did get my Pinetree catalog, along with Totally Tomato and Seeds From Italy. I need to take time to sit down and look at them.

That lox plate sounds tasty! I haven't had lox in a long time, probably on a bagel.

  7. So glad you had a nice Thanksgiving. It has been a while since I've had lox and I love them. Now I have a craving and will need to pick some up next time I grocery shop.

My Pinetree Seeds catalog came in last week as well as one I had not heard of, Totally Tomatoes. I have already earmarked a few pages in both.

  8. I hardly took any photos at Thanksgiving, was so busy running around fixing food. I didn't take any of the food either! Nice fence, it will look amazing with roses!

  9. The Mom, last year I was really good with photos, but this year I got a couple of long calls in the morning and barely had time to finish.

Diane, me too. I love rose arbors. I just hope I can pull it off.

    Robin, Thanks.

michelle, they were amazed. I only have two varieties and I think just the German Extra Hardy is coming up. I should have labeled them.

Villager, I'm wondering if my Pinetree catalog will even come. Everyone else seems to have theirs. I guess I just have to be patient.

    Shawn Ann, I hope so.

GrafixMuse, I got Totally Tomatoes last year. I find it a bit overwhealming. Too many choices. Though also fun.

meemsnyc, Thanks. I hope your Thanksgiving was fun even though it was so busy.

  11. Wow! The fence looks very nice! What a good shot of your garden area behind it too!

The garlic makes me think of them as green candles of hope for a good harvest. Don't they look like candle flames? Isn't seeing the new growth invigorating!

    Nice pics! Thanks for sharing.

  12. I love the new fence - creates a nice separation of the garden area from other spaces and it will be a perfect back drop for the roses on the arbor.

Sounds like your Thanksgiving meal was a success. We enjoyed a very pleasant day as well with family and are still eating on leftovers. Not complaining though as the meal was delicious and the leftovers are just as good.

  15. Here in Australia, I have just harvested our garlic. Now I am in the process of plaiting the 15 pounds worth for use over the coming year.
    happy growing,
