Friday was a sad day. I just knew I was going to have nothing to say to you today. Yeah I've been eating my frozen chard. I've been eating some of the soups I had previously made. But mostly I wasn't eating from my stores. I was eating out of the house or leftovers. I was going to make soup on Friday, but then my husband came home and brought me a beautiful fruit and cheese platter. His work was just going to toss it. So half the cheese went to my townhouse mate who cooked a quiche for all of us for dinner on Friday. And for a couple of days I was eating fruit and cheese for lunch. It was delicious but hardly from the garden.
Then Sunday was my saving grace. I went to water the onions and noticed they needed a trim. So I kept their little trimmings and put them into some eggs for breakfast.
A photo. Yes that is what I obviously needed for Harvest Monday. It might be a slightly out of focus photo, but at least it had something I grew in it. This kind of thing doesn't get tallied, but at least it was fresh and grown by me. I wanted to see if anything was alive in my tunnel on Sunday, but after the nice melting rain, we had more snow. So once again it is covered up.

ReplyDeleteI trimmed my onions yesterday too and used the trimmings to add to our pizza toppings. Added nice flavor and some color. I had a few odds and ends harvests this week, but they were all too small (except for the mushrooms) and I did not get a single picture of any of it - so I am once again skipping harvest Monday. The greens are getting a shot of new energy though and our bitter cold snap is ending so hopefully they will really get going here soon. I am getting very hungry for fresh salads as we have been eating from frozen, stored, and preserved items for quite some time now almost exclusively. Time for a fresh harvest change!

More snow? Seems like you've had more than your fair share. It will be spring though before long and then you will be working in those new beds!

ReplyDeleteI'm jealous of your rain. I was shoveling out the hoophouse Saturday and realized my (I hope) overwintering leeks are buried in at least 4 feet of snow.

Ahhh, Spring will be here before we know it, and then you will have a bumper crop of everything!! Nice idea to use onion tops. Makes a nice addition to just about anything.

ReplyDeleteYou're going to laugh when you see my post, it includes a shot of snow in my garden, but there's so little of it... But any amount of snow around here is a big deal so I couldn't resist showing it. The eggs look yummy. It won't be long until you're showing of an abundance of produce from your garden!

ReplyDeleteNot much happening in my covered garden. Everything pretty much looks like it did in November. At least it is still alive though. With any luck we should have some life outside in a few weeks.

ReplyDeleteMelissa, they don't technically "need" to be trimmed. I've always done it since they grow so tall and this keeps them under my lights well. Onions can also get top heavy when grown under lights. When they do they fall over. Mine seem fine right now in that respect, but they would grow very very tall if I let them. It is easier to keep them under the lights when they are short. And they don't mind being cut at all.

Laura, We are getting a nice little warm spell in the 40s for this week (though wed will be frigid). I hope it melts out a bit more. So it looks like both our cold spells will be gone.
The Mom, It melted the snow we got the other day at least. I don't think it melted out any more than that. I can't wait for a fresh harvest.

villager, yup more snow. But yesterday it rained and sleeted all day and washed it away. I can't wait for spring.
Ali, I hope those leeks are doing OK. At least the snow is a good insulator. It probably kept the really cold air away from them. I'm hoping spring comes early.

Deb, I looked at your calculator. I use one of my own that I made on Excel. All I have to do is plug in the weights each week, just like yours. Though mine has some extra totals so I can fill in my sidebar tally easily.
michelle, I do laugh at the places that shut down when they get a little tiny bit of snow. But I know they have no way to get it off the roads so they have to let it melt. I still laugh though because my road usually has 6" left in spots when they finish plowing. I have to deal with the mess all the time.
Mal, I haven't even started my leeks yet. Usually I would have but I'm waiting for my soil to come in. Your leeks look lovely though.
Dan, I'm hoping mine looks like it did in November, but I'm not holding my breath. I hope at least some of it survived.
Mac, I haven't even come close to emptying my canned goods. The tomato sauce has to last until August which is still five months away. I'm thinking I made enough of it last year.
Lynda, I wish I had some of that broccoli. I love it so much. I'm planting more than usual this spring in hopes of having lots.
What a great idea for a post.. we're still harvesting over a dozen veggies from the garden - even though we have over a foot of snow still on the beds.. But fresh seed is sown under the mini hoop tunnels and in the cold frame. spring can't be that far away! :)
