This was a great April harvest week. Once again I had spinach. This was enough for three meals for me. I had two salads and still have one serving left in the fridge.
But I also had a new harvest. Above are my dwarf bok choys. I planted them all too close together so I could harvest the baby ones.
Now a baby, baby boc choy doesn't weigh all that much. But it was good for a nice little harvest. I harvested four of them. Two of the white stemmed variety and one of the green stemmed.
And had a nice vegetable stir fry with the boc choy. Also in the stir fry are onion, broccoli stems, and mushrooms - all from the grocery store. But the garlic was from last year's harvest. Garlic keeps so well, but a few are starting to spout.
So the harvest totals this week are:
- Bok choy 2.9oz
- Spinach 10 oz
- Weekly Total 12.9oz
- Yearly Total: 2.13
- Still in the hole: $-490.01

ReplyDeleteAwesome harvest Daphne! My spring sown spinach is ready for a first harvest. I plant my bok choy very close too. I don't know about you but I prefer harvesting them on the smaller side.

ReplyDeleteI skipped doing Harvest Monday this week as I was out of town all day on Easter and did not want to try and do a blog post this morning before work (always end up late when I try and do stuff like that!). I think I will be more than catching up next week though as the greens in the garden are really putting on growth and should provide us with a lot more to harvest in the weeks to come. I think spring finally has arrived in my area. Still rainy and overcast, but the temperatures are coming up a bit and it makes the world of difference.
What perfect speciment of greens you got there, with no bug damage! My greens are only just starting to develop their first true set of leaves, I think it's just been too cold this spring (in Indiana, anyway) for much growth.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely looking bed of bok choys! Slugs are bad here with our wet spring. Sluggo is keeping them at bay though. There's nothing like spring greens!
ReplyDeleteThe greens look great! The slugs have gotten into mine despite copper collars and Sluggo Plus; they are stll edible, but not very pretty. I did harvest some herbs for the marinade for our Easter lamb...I've shared the recipe on my blog...

Jody, Yes just wait until July. My friends kid me about joining my CSA, but the reality is I'll get an awful lot of it this year.
ReplyDeleteFunkbunny, well the caterpillars haven't come out yet this spring (and they are under a row cover. The slugs will find my garden. It is very strange starting with no slugs in the yard, but I've found snails on the other side. It is only a matter of time before I find them here.

Thomas, I'm hoping my spring sown spinach will be in time for getting my beans, squash and corn in. My spinach got seeded very late.
Laura, I always post in the morning - well 95% of the time. Even on days I have to work the store. But then I get up really early and I don't have to leave until 9:15 so I have several hours in the morning. I'm glad you finally got spring. This week will be a really warm week for us. Luckily no 80s yet, I hate 80s in the spring time, but we will get into the 70s tomorrow. Hopefully low 70s only. I like not getting hot weather in the spring like last time. I want the hot weather to wait until at least mid May. Most of my warm weather plants won't go in until then unless we get a huge warm up.
thyme, I'm sure the slug will find their way in eventually. They haven't yet.
villager, I usually have to use my Sluggo too, but no slugs or snails yet. Having a new garden is very weird. But the bugs will come. The good and the bad.
Deb, I've just had bird damage on some lettuce and kale. The birds are slowly finding the garden sadly.
ReplyDeleteYAY! I finally got a Harvest Monday! Not as varied as yours, but lots of tasty lettuce and a bit of spinach. My unprotected spinach has leaf miner eggs already. It's too early to tell about what's happening under the netting.

ReplyDeleteSilly me, I forgot to plant any type of cabbages this year (he said enviously eyeing Daphne's delectable bok choi). I have lots of other things growing, though most of them were direct seeded and are still too small to harvest. Tomatoes, squashes and melons are taking over the greenhouse.

Wow, your bok choy looks great. I have Asian Greens envy. I've been harvesting, but not blogging. Too busy getting my community garden plot up and running. Finally did a Harvest Monday post today with a few photos of my backyard garden. I was stunned that my harvest this week added up to nearly 9 lbs.

gardenvariety-hoosier, I wish I wouldn't have a problem with slugs, but they are very endemic here. I don't have them now because the beds are new. They will show up, but not necessarily to your place.
Really Rose, they grow really fast though. They were the first of the brassicas to be picked. Even before the tatsoi.
Lou, I wondered where you had gone too. It is a good excuse to not blog though.
Your asian greens look excellent. You must be running a bit warmer then use this spring.
