Harvest Monday, May 6th, 2013

My big harvest this week was kale. It was starting to bolt, so I got the tasty flowers and the leaves. Most of the leaves were blanched, frozen, and vacuum sealed for later.

The kale flowers were eaten as a spring treat. Kale doesn't give much in the way of flowers, but what they give is tasty. I still have a handful of plants out there in bloom. I'll have to cut some down again.

I've been picking cilantro regularly. Not much all at once but some here and there. I used this in a recipe that called for cilantro and coriander. Two different tastes from the same plant. Though the coriander was harvested last year.

And they were put in a dish of curried sweet potatoes. Though I used this recipe as a starting point, I made it an easier one. I swear that one would have taken forever to make and it was asking for three pans. I used one pan and it took about 20 minutes. Vegetable dishes shouldn't take forever to make or I just won't make them on a regular basis. I also don't have whole Indian spices in my spice drawers only ground. Yes it would probably be better with whole spices, but corners have to be cut to use what is on hand. Either way it was delicious.

The fruit tally changed last week, as I added the additional fruit trees on order. A pear tree is coming from Stark Bros and was $35.94. Two apple trees are coming from Miller and they are $63.65.

  • Greens 3.63 lbs
  • Herbs 0.03 lbs
  • Weekly Tally 3.66 lbs
  • Yearly Tally 4.95 lbs

  1. Your kale is bolting and mine is just beginning to produce. I hope to get enough kale harvest to freeze this year.

  2. I didn't know you can eat kale so thanks for that tip! Mine is also bolting and I was going to pull it all out so I'll try sauteeing it.

  3. I just pulled the last of my kale this weekend. It was all bolting and I needed the bed they were in for planting out my tomatoes. I am amazed at your cilantro that is growing. If I remember correctly, you have a self seeding patch of it? I may need to devote a bed to dill and cilantro and let them get into a self seeding cycle like that.

    1. Yes I have a self seeding patch. I switched where it was last year. I just took the chaff from all my coriander seeds and tossed it on the new location. It worked perfectly. I can never get all the seeds separated.

  4. Some of my over wintered asian greens are bolting, as is the mache & claytonia. We have a bit longer before the kale bolts.

  5. I just wish cilantro would grow around here... It barely starts and it bolts. :-( LOVE the stuff. Yours looks so fresh and fabulous!

  6. It's still raining here and nothing but potatoes are in the garden. It's been a rough spring so far... I do have kale from last year. I have onions and walking onions galore. I have asparagus (a little) and we have been eating lots of "yard salads" as my son likes to call my lovely compilations of wild greens! Oh, and the chives are up and running, and even developing flower buds.

  7. Wow, it is only 9:30 and the list is full! Lots to see today i guess!

Daphne, all your meals looks so delicious and so healthy! Your cilantro looks so good, mine didn't make it through winter and so much moving around and what I have seeded so far has not come up. Don't know if I will get any.

  8. Yes, 7:20 here in California and I'm #36 on the list! Happy to see so many harvests happening around the country. Aren't we happy to be harvesting some of our own food and part of the local food movement?

  9. Your pictures look delicious. I just bought some cilantro. I love it in almost everything. Wonderful plant sale over the weekend and I got quite a few heirloom tomatoes that I have not tried before. Can't wait.

  10. My kale is long gone... I'm not missing it too much because there's lots of spinach to take its place. I like the kale flower shoots as well. This spring/summer I'm trying a purple sprouting broccoli that is supposed to be a cross between kale and broccoli and I think it's going to produce kale-like flower shoots.

I agree with you about overly fussy recipes, if there is a more simple way I go for it. I like to cook, but I don't want to spend a lot of time doing it.

  11. Delicious meals you have there. My kale is new, it's still kinda cool here, don't know when they will bolt. All my Asian greens have bolted except the purple mustard green from Renee's salad mix, it's growing in filtered shade, maybe that's why it hasn't bolted yet.

  12. Your kale and cilantro look wonderful. You sure do know how to use things in your meals. Will you have to use any chemicals on your apple trees? Nancy

    1. Not sure yet. The plan is to do dormant oil spraying. But I'm not going to use other sprays unless I find I really need them. I'm going to bag my apples so the insects won't get in. Hopefully they are disease resistant enough so that that isn't a problem. We will see.

  13. Kale flowers ARE tasty! And your curry looks delicious. I love curry, I love sweet potatoes, so I will have to try that recipe. Thanks for the idea.

  14. The two overwintered kale plants have already bolted so it's good to know that the flowers can be eaten. When I added my link to the list it should have added at #42 but Mr. Linky inserted it at #21 (???). Hope it did not replace anyone's link.

  15. My cilantro is just started to look more cilantro-like. I'm hoping I can get it to the point of collecting coriander. I like the idea of self-seedling cilantro. Definitely will try to remember that for the day I get backyard! Thanks for hosting harvest monday!
