Harvest Monday, May 5th, 2014

My first weighed and tallied harvest.

My second one was a bit bigger. Plus I harvested some chives. Though I didn't photograph it I also harvested some sage, but it was unweighted as it was so small.

I used the harvests in my lunches. I had two lunches with homemade tortillas, cheese, avocados, green onions, cilantro, and my mixed greens. One even had fried eggs in it.

And one lunch with a nice salad. Oh how I love spring greens. I don't harvest enough yet to have this every day, but it won't be long. The lettuce is getting bigger everyday. Even with me stealing the little side leaves.

I finally started a tally sheet too. And every week I put it into my spreadsheet and add it to the tally. This weeks tally is obviously pretty low. And don't I have the worst handwriting? Sometimes even I have trouble figuring out what it says.

I also spent yet more money. This time for some bricks and some rebar. I use them to hold the edges of my row covers. And this year I've got a lot more row covers than I usually do. And boy is rebar expensive. At least it is a one time expense - unlike the row cover itself that degrades over time. Sadly they didn't have any of the 4' long ones, so I had to get a whole lot more of the 2' long rebar. I still really don't have enough. I had to use one bamboo pole. It doesn't work as well as it isn't very heavy. But I weighted it down with a brick. I hope it holds.

  • Mixed Greens: 0.24 lbs
  • Herbs: 0.08 lbs
  • Total: 0.32 lbs
  • Spent: $56
  • Tally: -505.93

  1. You are so far ahead of us. Hoping to be able to steal side leaves from my lettuce this week.

  3. Those first spring greens are just so good. We are enjoying them here now too. Any word on how Granny is doing? Nothing posted on her blog since her daughter wrote it for her.

  5. There's nothing like spring greens! I have trouble reading my wife's handwriting all the time. And mine's not much better. I can make out yours, but then I guess I knew what to expect from your post.

  6. Very nice greens! I'm not measuring mine yet as it's too small really, but I think next one will be weighted.

  7. Your greens look great! I need to get some more lettuce in the ground ASAP. Some years I feel like I grow too much and others not quite. Maybe one day I'll get it right.

  10. Yay for the first harvest! My first round of lettuce is almost done and I'm having a difficult time getting the second round going. I'm going into a lettuce gap soon.

  11. Your greens are bigger than my greens! But I keep snipping them anyway! My spinach is starting to bolt already and I was wanting more to freeze like you do. I need to weigh my things. I think if I would get familiar with my scales I would. (I drag my feet learning new things as it takes more of my time!) Your salads for lunch look sooooo good! Nancy

  13. Yes, I'm jealous - my lettuce isn't even in the ground yet (maybe tomorrow?).

It's funny you should mention the rebar as I need to get a bunch for both the trellises I'm making and for holding down the row covers. Like you it I had a bit of sticker shock when I went to the big box stores and found them selling the 4' lengths for around $5-$6. I need about 20 pieces so that really adds up.

I looked up rebar/steel companies in my area and found a steel manufacturer that sold me 20 lengths of 4' rebar for $3.50 each - they are cut it to length so you can ask for any size you want. I will be picking it up in a few days. Maybe there are some steel manufacturers in your area? I had no idea they were there until I actually looked for them & you may be able to save a pretty penny.

  14. Nice greens! I'm hoping for a small spinach harvest next weekend. Mine managed to over winter through the polar vortex, which I never would have even tried if it weren't for your blog!

  19. I can't seem to send you a msg via e-mail so will post it here. I am sorry to hear of Granny's passing. I would have been okay to go ahead with the books but did not respond in time. It is okay either way. I want to thank you for the time and work and effort that you have put into this! Nancy
