Dave of Our Happy Acres will be the new host. Dave has been a regular on Harvest Monday since 2012. He grows a lot of interesting vegetables and varieties. This year I'm growing Thai Rai Kaw Tok squash because of how he described it. And I can't wait to try my first bite. He is always informative and fun to read. He will make a great host. So come Monday head on over there to link up.
And I just couldn't resist. I harvested my sweet potatoes on Tuesday. Do you remember the experiment where I used mycorrhizae as a soil amendment? It seemed to help my corn a bit, but not a lot. The piles on the left side are with the amendment. On the right is without. I don't see much of a difference if at all. The difference I do see is large piles (each pile represents a single plant) on the sides. The sides are where there is a lot of brick paving. So the biggest difference is which ones get more heat. Those were the ones that grew bigger, especially the ones at the corners.
Mostly the Purple grew into large tubers, but the above Garnet got pretty big too. Mostly the Garnet set a lot of tubers and some grew huge and some didn't. Almost all the Purples grew huge.
All in all it was 61 pounds, split about half and half. Though I had more Purple plants, the Garnets got the good spot near the paving, so it evened out. 61 pounds is huge. Last year I got 42 pounds. Sadly though there is some insect damage, so I'll have to cut around that when using it. But still a wonderful harvest. I'll be curing them for a few weeks before I use them. I can't wait to eat sweet potatoes again.
Very impressive sweet potatoes. And you made a great choice for your successor. I'm very glad the forum is continuing. Hope you will contribute from time to time!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be so strange to not be checking in here on Mondays. I'm going to miss your posts, all of them, not just Mondays. It's so good of Dave to step in and take over, I'm sure he's going to be a great Harvest Monday host.
ReplyDeleteSixty-one pounds of sweet potatoes is wonderful! That should keep you feasting for a while. My experience with the inoculants is that they make a noticeable difference with squash, peppers, and eggplants - bigger plants, fruit, and yields. My brassicas seem to get larger as well. I'm not so sure that they make a big difference with other vegetables.
I would be very happy to get Sweet Potatoes like that, but I suspect mine will produce a negligible crop! I'm very glad you have been able to find someone to take over hosting Harvest Monday, but we'll all miss you. All the best!
ReplyDeleteThat is a big sweet potato harvest! I love the Purple ones, they are so productive for me. I'm glad Norma sent me one to try as they have become my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to be hosting Harvest Monday, but sad to see you stop. Like Michelle I will miss your posts, and it will be strange to not check in here every Monday.
Thank you, Dave for taking over hosting Harvest Monday. You have some big shoes to fill, but I think you will do wonderfully. See you Monday :)
DeleteDave will be a great host. I love reading his blog. He has helped me to become a better gardener.
DeleteThat's a lot of sweet potatoes, I haven't pulled my SP yet, same purple ones Norma sent me.
ReplyDeleteDitto Michelle and Dave, I'm sad to see you stop but understand, thank you for keeping our little community together for so many years, your hard work is much appreciated, I've learned a lot from you and other bloggers as well.
Dave is a perfect successor to HM, hope to see your post occasionally, I am in a blogger burned out mode at the moment, taking a break now and will post occasionally to the new Dave's HM in the future.
So maybe from time to time you'll stop in to Harvest Monday at Dave's and let us know how you're doing? Glad to hear Dave signed up. I commented on his blog too that he should consider it.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing amount of sweet potatoes, and they're huge. How many plants did you end up putting in?
ReplyDeleteNot only are your posts wonderful but your plant photography is beautiful as well. Lots of people take very long breaks from blogging myself included, but I don't think you ever did take a break.
Eight Garnets and ten Purples.
DeleteWhat a wonderful harvest and great experiment!! Sweet potatoes are still on my list to try our hands at...maybe next year :-)
ReplyDeleteI am impressed with your sweet potatoes. I didn't realize the size from the first photo, but was amazed to see how large they were in the photo where you are holding them.
ReplyDeleteI am happy to hear Dave will be carrying on Harvest Monday. I wish you well, Daphne and hope to see your comments once in a while on the blogs I visit.
Holy moly those are some big sweet potatoes!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting hm I always enjoyed taking part!!!!!!
Hi Daphne, Nice looking sweet potatoes. I will look forward to reading Happy Acres blog on Mondays now but will miss you. Nancy
ReplyDeleteYour sweet potatoes are incredible! I'm hoping I get at least a few decent tubers but judging by the size (or lack thereof) of my sweet potato plants, I have a feeling I will be looking at a few fat roots instead. I'm still contemplating taking some cuttings to overwinter - I'm sure our first frost is just around the corner, so I may give it a go - nothing to lose really.
ReplyDeleteWe will definitely miss you on Harvest Monday - I remember when I did my first one last year & how exciting it was to finally be a part of it after reading them for sooooo long. I'm very glad that Dave is picking up the torch.
That is a gorgeous harvest! Beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteThat's a LOT of sweet potatoes! Love how huge they are! Just absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow, great harvest of sweet potatoes this year! They look fantastic. Can I just say how much I'm going to miss reading your Monday reports. I have been following your Monday Harvest Report for over 5 years (even before I was blogging) and I will miss your blog being part of my Monday morning routine! Good luck to you in all you do!!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic sweet potatoes Daphne! Thanks again for being such an amazing host for HM and all your advice and inspiring posts. I hope your garden continues to thrive (which is down to all your hard work of course). Have fun!
ReplyDeleteWow! I haven't grown sweet potatoes - yet. this post may inspire me to try next season.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! they are beauties. apparently it's too cold to grow sweet potatoes here in Tassie -but you get it much colder than us daphne and you have really succeeded. that's a fabulous crop.
ReplyDeleteA fine looking crop Daphne! Congrats. You'll be eating well. :)
ReplyDeleteWe're still a couple of weeks away from harvest. Hoping we do as well...
