Working on the Nursery

For having only two people living in our house we have a lot of bedrooms. We weren't looking for this many. Three would have been more than enough even when the kids came home, but instead we ended up with four. One of the rooms is pretty much mine. We call it the nursery. It's fun to call it that because I'm almost 50 and it freaks people out when they first hear it. Especially the relatives.

It contains a day bed (not in photo), a sewing desk, my beads, clothes lines (you can see the pins in the upper right) and of course my light tower. The lights are why it is called the nursery. It is my plant nursery. I finally got around to putting this part of the room together. Which included putting the new fluorescent lights together. I need to start my onion seeds soon, so I couldn't put it off any longer. Tomorrow I'll try to find all the important things like seed trays and pots. The soil has already been found and is in the pails by the lights.

  1. Oh my wow! This is awesome, what a dream! What type of fluorescent lights do you use? Are they special grow lights or just regular fluorescents?

  2. A whole room for seedlings! Be still my beating heart.

  3. It looks like you are almost ready! As usual, I am all out of soil for starting seeds. I guess that I better pick it up this weekend since the garden centers are only open then this time of year.

  4. I use the same shelving unit for my seed starting. It works out great! I use two sets of fluorescents per shelf.
I will look forward to seeing your seedling progress!
    Best of luck!

  8. I have to admit, seeing the "Nursery" in your post name made me wonder too...ha! Anyway, you've got a great looking setup there!

  9. I love the set up. That is certainly the only kind of nursery I ever want to deal with anymore.

  10. I have a room like that in my house, except we call it the craft room. It has my sewing machine, yarn, fabric, the retractable laundry line and other things. Unfortunately the ceiling is sloped so my nursery light set up won't fit in there. I just bought a new metal shelf and some more lights so I can expand my seed starting set up this year. Just waiting for my Fedco order to arrive.

  11. meemsnyc, I use cool white lights. They put out blue light that the plants like for growing leaves. It isn't good for flowering plants but it is great for seedlings. And it is cheap.

Ribbit, lol yes it does have to share with all the crafts and the laundry, but it is a lot of space. Weirdly not more than I had when they were in my laundry room in the last house. But I had a really huge laundry room.

Robin, I'm hoping I have enough until I get more. I want to do a bulk order, but it won't get delivered until March.

    GonferalinID, mine too

Peggy, I only use one, but only have two flats in them the long way.

    Veggie pak, thanks

Laura, lol only a gardener would say that.

    Diane, thanks

EG, its so much fun to freak people out ... for just a bit.

The Mom, I couldn't imagine dealing with little kids again. Well when I'm a grandma, but not my own.

Emily, my fedco order came two days ago. Whoohoo. It is what prompted me to get off my ass and get moving.

  12. Hi Daphne, your Nursery Room comment about the relatives made me laugh out loud, great! Lovely blog. Hope you are recovering and feeling better. Family and people our side and your side of the "pond" have been suffering similar symptoms. Roll on Spring!

  13. A whole... extra... room?! I'm so jealous! Your seed starting area looks so nice and neat. Mine is veery cluttered. I could use a whole room!

  14. Looks good Daphne! My dad had real nurseries at 50... glade I didn't pick up many of his genes :-)

  15. Glad you got it all started. I just did the same thing the other day- only I lost my indoor room to do this in- now it's in the garage! I'm not sure I can keep the temps right- we'll see. I just put my pansy on them after they spent a week on the cold freezer and in the dark- sounds cold and lonely- I'm sure they'll be happy to start growing! I'm thinking of trying onions this year...so I'll be visiting a lot!

  16. Will you put some kind of retaining tray for water underneath? I'm always spilling.
You may be slightly jealous of my weather, but we are six people in a three-bedroom house -- you have me on room! This is a terrific use of space.
