Harvest Monday - 14 February 2011

I have one harvest to report - my sprouts. I don't put them on my tally, but I'm going to count them as a harvest for Harvest Monday. Those black lentils that were so bad in the lentil dish I made ages ago, were just fine to sprout. I've found that most store bought beans germinate pretty well. I've even used some Jacob's Cattle Beans to grow in the garden that were store bought. And they are a whole lot cheaper than the so called "sprouting beans". Basically they are just beans. As long as they aren't too old they will sprout. They usually are viable for 3-5 years from harvest.

These were much better to spout than to eat cooked. The first batch I made went into a stirfy.

The second went into fried rice. I almost didn't have a photo for you, but here it is as leftovers for lunch. Most of what you see is some beef stew. Oh how I love beef stew. It contained some of my garden fare too. It had a cup of home canned tomato sauce and some thyme from the garden at my last house.

Harvest Monday is a day to show off your harvests, how you are saving your harvest, or how you are using your harvest. If you have a harvest you want to show off, add your name and link to Mr Linky below.

  1. I like bean sprout stir fry with tofu and soy sauce. Simple dish but delicious.

  2. I've been wanting to try sprouting my own beans. I never thought to use store bought beans.

I am looking forward to all the Monday harvests this week since all I can do is dream about my garden growing. At least we will have some warm days this week that will reduce the snow on the ground.

  5. Malay, that does sound delicious. The rest of my family wouldn't eat it. I haven't a clue as to why they hate tofu. I love it.

GrafixMuse, I've yet to have a batch fail me. If beans get that old they dry out too much and really aren't that good for cooking anyway. I'm glad we are going to get some melting too. I can't wait to see the blacktop on my street. Right now I have spots that have many inches of ice on one side and clear on the other. It makes for hard driving. Pretty hard walking too.

    Mary, good luck

Villager, Oh that sounds delicious. I love spring rolls.

  9. I'm not a fan of sprouts...there's always something green in the garden I like better. My son tells me sunflower sprouts are delicious...maybe I'll give them a try.

I posted my harvest totals on my site: broccoli anyone? Pleeeeeze!

  12. Did you really sprout them in a canning jar? That makes it look easy. I've been looking into sprouting and get scared off by all the apparati. Sprouting lentils sounds like a great way to get started. Thanks for the motivation!

  13. It's always satisfying to have something you grew yourself, no matter how cold it is outside, isn't it?

  14. Laura, I forget to start them sometimes. I have to start some more soon too.

    Shawn Ann, thanks

    Barbie, thanks

Lynda, my husband hates sprouts, but then I take his part of the meal out before I add them. And I would so take your broccoli.

Mac, I wanted to try pea sprouts, but haven't gotten the seed for them.

    Deb, thanks

    Katrina, thanks

tervy, yup I just use a canning jar. I cut a piece of cheese cloth for the top and put it on with a canning ring. No special equipment required. Put in no more than 1/8 of a jar of lentils. Less is good. I soak the lentils for a day or less. Pour off the water. Then just rinse them about three times a day or more. I keep the jar on its side for better ventilation. When they are big enough I rinse off the seed coat as I don't like that part. The hardest part is the last one.

The Keeper, always. I can't wait for real plants though. My onion seedlings are getting me by for now. But I want to get my hands in the dirt.

  15. Yum, that stew looks REALLY good. I have tons of mung beans that I should sprout. I'll been a long time since I've done any sprouting.
