Harvest Monday - January 16, 2012

I checked on my tatsoi on Thursday. We were predicted to get some really cold weather for a change. Saturday and Sunday nights were predicted to be in the single digits. Brrrr. The tatsoi is pretty good at withstanding cold weather, but I found out last year that it doesn't like weather that cold and after a while the freeze/thaws would be too much for it. Last year I told myself I'd pick it all in December, but with the abnormally high temps we have been getting I picked all the Asian greens except the tatsoi in December. I was thinking it might make it until the first January thaw.

This is what the bed looked like. Very pretty for this time of year. Except if you look underneath all that there is a lot of rotting going on. Some heads were all rotted through in the middle. Some just had a few outer leaves. So I picked it all and cleaned up the bed.

It weighed in at 1.96 lbs. I'll be eating this over the next few weeks.

Harvest Monday is a day to show off your harvests, how you are saving your harvest, or how you are using your harvest. If you have a harvest you want to show off, add your name and link to Mr Linky below.

  1. So green and fresh.
I am amazed at the amount of hard work you have to put in to save those from cold weather.!

  2. Your tatsoi look healthy. That is quite an harvest for this time of year. Do you eat them cook or uncooked?

  3. Holy leafy greens, looks good. Maybe next year I'll give it a go.

  4. They look crisp and tasty. Do you have any idea what caused the rotting? Too wet? It would be great if you could eliminate the cause of the rot. The plants look like they were really trying to grow well. Good luck with it!

  5. They sure look great. Sorry you had the cold weather. I know we have been below zero here for the past 2 morning. I guess winter is here.

  8. I bought Tatsoi seed this year and am excited to give this hardy green a try. Your harvest is beautiful. I have some molds and rot happening on a few of the beds under cover - too much cold combined with damp/wet. We are down to 19 degrees this morning so I am probably going to lose a few things now as well.

  9. Your tatsoi is wonderful looking. All my uncovered greens turned to mush while we were gone over Christmas. If we'd had some snow to protect them they would have survived. My cold frame is frozen shut so it will be a while before we have any harvests besides eggs.

  10. We have a few tatsoi plants in our cold frame this winter that we haven't eaten yet. They are a lot more hardy that the other Asian Greens I've tried. These seem to be holding up just as well as our spinach and chard. They should be a tasty addition to our meals over the next couple of weeks.

  14. What a great harvest this time of year! We have a few inches of snow and I just started my onions and I am trying to start celery from a cutting from the grocery store.

  15. The tatsoi looks wonderful! We've only 2 heads left and it's too cold to venture out to check them. I ended up writing about a different kind of harvest instead...

  17. Nice harvest, despite the rotted parts underneath. Glad some was salvaged!

  18. I love the colour of Tatsoi - such a vivid green. Shame it was rotting but great that you managed to salvage a fair bit.

  20. 2 pounds? It looks like so much more! Beautiful. Mine are so timy right now. Rich gave it the thumbs up at least to mix with things so it stays in the garden. :-)

  21. Norma, I eat tatsoi cooked most of the time. On occasion I put a leaf or two into a salad, but in summer.

Veggie PAK, I'm sure it is the moisture mixed with the cold weather. I keep them under a plastic cover so The moisture builds up in the mini climate. I ought to open the ends on occasion to help with that, but frankly I'm too lazy to do it often enough to prevent the problem.

  22. Tat soi is so pretty in its rosetty form. That's a LOT of it. You'll really enjoy it over time, I guess.
