I've cleared out most of the greens that I need to use up. I still have some chard and some bok choy left. I expect to have those done soon and then I'll start picking from the garden again until it is all used up. The weather has been very very nice. Too nice. My husband told me that this year is on track to be the warmest year for the US in recorded history. I'm really hoping for a real winter this year. The insect pests were a bit out of control and their timing was all off. It is easier to garden when things are predictable.
Harvest Monday is a day to show off your harvests, how you are saving your harvest, or how you are using your harvest. If you have a harvest you want to show off, add your name and link to Mr Linky below.
I am hoping for a real winter this year also!
ReplyDeleteI covered my beds to protect from the predicted freeze last night. I'm hoping my brassicas will figure out what it's supposed to do (ha!) and be a nice cold weather crop for me.
ReplyDeleteI need to figure out a good way to handle greens. When I braise them they end up too tough. So my husband wants me to just boil them like his mother did, which leeches away the flavor and is yuck.
I like your pizza idea.
I too am hoping for a real winter this year, won't mind a few extreme cold days to get rid of some of the insect pests.
ReplyDeleteDid you parboil/precook your sweet potatoes before adding to the stir-fry?
No I find they cook very fast if you just slice them thinly. They only took about five minutes and were maybe an 1/8th of an inch thick.
DeleteThat pizza looks PERFECT Daphne! Yum.
ReplyDeleteThe begining of the fall was really cool here, and now it's back to normal. Who knows what is going to happen. ?
OMGosh, those pictures....what time is dinner!?
ReplyDeleteIt is a race against time with greens in the refrigerator!
ReplyDeleteWe're hoping for real winter here too. It's hard to be active in the winter without the snow.
ReplyDeleteYour pizza looks absolutely delicious! Sometimes sauce just isn't necessary, even if one can eat it :-)
ReplyDeleteEnjoying cooking the harvest is as important as growing it — delicious post!
ReplyDeleteThat coleslaw looks really good.
ReplyDeleteI tried growing cabbage one year and when it was ready, nasty critters were in between the leaves. Do you prevent that by growing them under row covers?
It prevents the caterpillars from getting in, but the slugs and earwigs still can. I find that cabbage is tight enough that they don't get in. Chinese cabbage can be an issue sometimes, but I've never had a problem with regular cabbage.
DeletePizza Bianca, yummy! I like to make pizza without tomato sauce even though I don't have a problem with tomatoes. One of my favorites is with thin sliced potatoes and mushrooms. Winter squash also makes a great pizza bianca.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried pomegranate molasses? It's tangy and sweet (some brands more sweet than others) and might make a good substitute for tomato in some dishes.
Yum, everything looks so good, especially the coleslaw. I haven't had coleslaw in a while since I didn't grow any cabbage this year and seeing yours is making me crave some.
No I've never had that before. I've tried using plum sauce to substitute. It worked just OK.
DeleteThat looks great, Daphne! No harvest for me but I do have a new bread recipe to share on my blog today :)
ReplyDeleteYum~~ I like pizza without tomato sauce as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat a coincidence, I made a coleslaw with butternut squash dressing, if I get my acts together maybe I can link it to Thursday's Kitchen Cupboard.
Hi Daphne; I'm not putting forward a post for your Harvest Monday link-up this week, because the only thing I have harvested since last week is more Radicchio, and there is a limit to how much interest I can expect people to show in such things...! Still reading what everyone else is doing though!
ReplyDeleteDaphne,
ReplyDeletePlease remove the 1st link #15, it was the wrong URL, THANKS.
Yummy foods...I'm sure you have...but have you ever done pesto instead of sauce? I miss my overabundance of swiss chard! Must sow more of EVERYTHING next year.
ReplyDeleteStrangely even though I like basil a lot, I'm not a big pesto fan. I eat it occasionally, but not a lot.
DeleteP.S. What do you put on your stir fry in way of sauce?
ReplyDeleteIt had just a touch of soy sauce. It really didn't need much with the caramelized onions.
Deleteoh YUM
ReplyDeleteI like the look of your coleslaw...I don't think cabbages would grow too well in pots (would they) which is a shame.
ReplyDeleteOh if only the weather was predictable ........
ReplyDeleteYour coleslaw looks tasty and
what does hubby have in his fried rice if not veggies?
Rice, chicken, and egg.
DeleteEverything looks so delicious! Even the pizza without the sauce! We got some small hail here today. Didn't even open up the cold frames. Nancy
ReplyDeleteEverything looks yummy. I like pizza without sauce and often use pesto or just brush with a little olive oil then top with whatever is on hand. K and I both like different veggies too so stir frying anything is a challenge. I have to have everything separated into batches of his, hers, and both then plate it up separately to serve.
ReplyDeleteI've got to try that Pizza, yum!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the fresh cabbage/carrots/onion mix. One of my favorites too :)
