Harvest Monday July 22, 2013

It isn't much, but I did get one harvest on Saturday when I got back. A few beans, two unfertilized zucchini. I don't think I'll even bother to do a tally this week. I'm hoping the garden will get back into production this week.

I did technically harvest my onions last week, but they are curing right now and don't get added to the tally until they are done.

    I hope you enjoyed your vacation! I am sure you will have the garden back in shape this week. The onions look like they sized up nicely!

    Lovely onions! Perhaps I'll get the hang of growing them someday. It sounds like you had a good time on vacation. Alaska is someplace I haven't been yet, but want to go.

    Glad you had a lovely vacation. Visited Denali Park a few years ago, wish I stayed a whole week.
    I was away early part of July, not a good time for gardener to be away.

    Your onions look great! It's a job to catch up when you've been away at the height of the season, but you're probably very happy you had that nice vacation!

    Tell me about unfertilized zucchini. I thought the fruit wouldn't form if it wasn't fertilized. Thanks.

      The female fruit has a tiny little zucchini before it is fertilized. They are only about three inches long (though the size varies, I've had 2" and 6" ones in the past). As you can see they are shorter than my beans are. They are quite tender and tasty.

    Sorry, my last comment made zero sense when I posted it. Your onions look fantastic! We will be a while yet with ours because they got in so late, we have our fingers crossed that they will actually bulb up and give us something more that green onions.

    Always a challenge to leave during growing season, hope you were someplace cool or with a.c.! Can't believe you're already harvesting your beautiful onions, we've just put ours in the ground!

    I picked a number of unfertilized zucchini last year from the Cocozelle plant. Some of them reached a nice size and were very good, something between a zucchini flower and fruit. Sounds like a great trip to Alaska.

    I've always wanted to visit AK, sounds like an awesome trip! I've never thought of picking an unfertilized zucchini, although I usually don't realize that they are unfertilized until they are shriveled up and rotting.

    Those are nice looking onions! I would love to grow onions one day...but I will need a huge field because I use it a lot!

    Lovely onions - mine were late planted (as with everything this year!) so aren't even slightly ready yet. Found your Harvest Monday through Matron at Down at the Allotment. Lovely to have found your blog! I love a good gardening read!!
