Harvest Monday - 24 Janauary 2011

Again no harvests. We are buried right now under about two feet of snow. Yes we had another storm a few days ago. We might get another big nor'easter on Wednesday. Or it might go out to sea. It has been some winter so far. I figure that the snow is really good insulation for the tunnel, so I haven't dug it out.

I have however been using up the harvest slowly. I forgot most of what we ate, but I know we had meatloaf which used tomato sauce. We had a dinner of chicken apple sausages with my own applesauce on the side. Above is lunch one day. I ate the last of the apple sauce. Yes it looks green in real life too, but not quite that green. All the apples I made it with were green apples and I cook it down with the peels still on. It turned that one batch of sauce slightly green. The bread was made with thyme and oregano from my last garden. I still have a lot of herbs from my last garden. Sadly my rosemary is all gone. I had roast chicken one night with roast potatoes. I had plenty of sage for the chicken, but no rosemary for the potatoes. Well I had store bought, but it isn't the same.

Next week I'll have to get my tally started since I've been buying things. I've been working my my spreadsheet, but not quite done.

Harvest Monday is a day to show off your harvests, how you are saving your harvest, or how you are using your harvest. If you have a harvest you want to show off, add your name and link to Mr Linky below.

  3. I never thought abut having different herbs in my bread. I will have to try that one next time. I do like garlic bread and onion bread.

  4. I love the applesauce. I thought it was tomatillo salsa! I'm praying that storm goes out to see. This winter is killing me.

  6. I hope you catch a break with the next storm and it gives you a pass. The herb bread looks absolutely delicious!

  7. I have to agree that the herb bread looks absolutely delicious!

I checked the long-term weather forecast and March is supposed to be very mild!!! I hope it's true!

  8. We've been lucky and not had too much snow at one time. It's actually helped us because normally we get cold temps without snow cover, and things are unprotected. I'm hoping our rosemary survives again this winter.

  9. Kay, we just got what might be our coldest night last night. It was -3. But then I'm in zone 6. I was wondering if I was close enough to the ocean to avoid zone 6 and barely be in zone 7, but nope.

Veggie Pak, if only. I don't make them I buy them from Trader Joes. I make a lot of my food, but not all of it.

vrtlarica, oh herb bread is wonderful. I love rosemary bread too, but sadly out of good rosemary. I'll have to go to Penzeys at some point to get some decent stuff. I can't wait until I can grow some more this summer.

The Mom, lol it does look a bit green. I made two batch, one looks green and one is a little pink. I really like the pink one better for looks. They both taste good however.

Mary, we have had a snowy winter. It hasn't been too bitter cold for most of the time. Sort of normal. But very very snowy. They are bought sausages from Trader Joes.

Laura, thanks I hope we miss the storm too. Hubby is out of town. Though my townhouse mates would help shovel.

Robin, I hope it is mild. Really our snow cover and a mild spring is great for plants.

villager, I hope I can get a rosemary to survive next winter. I've tried in my area before and not succeeded. But I've been told that there has been rosemary in the area that has survived in the past. So we will see.

  10. I've been hearing about the cold snowy winter you've had this year, it makes me ever so grateful to be living where I do. I had a couple of harvests last week but like you have been eating mainly from previous harvests. Homemade apple sauce is the best, even if it is green, yours looks nice and chunky the way I like it.

  11. The bread looks scrumptious! And any applesauce that you can yourself has to beat precanned jumk by a mile!

  12. Your lunch looks yummy.
We're blessed compare to your Nor'easter, hope it won't dump too much snow on you.

  13. The bread looks yummy!

I got a couple of nice harvests from my winter raised bed...before we started tearing it apart to install a new one...

  14. Can't wait to hear about what is growing (or freezing) in your tunnel.

  15. We're in the same boat, covered with snow and cold, though we got down to -23 last night. I'm using up much of last year's harvest in soups.

  16. Daphne, I haven't forgotten that I need to send you Amish Paste Tomato seeds. I finally sorted my seeds today and found them so I'll get them in the mail to you tomorrow.

  17. Apple sauce - what a good idea. The 'street tree' is laden this year so if I can just get them before the parrots....

  18. I'm shivering just thinking about all of your snow. Take a peek at my blog post today to see photos of my day at the beach last week here in southern California. Good to know that you have Trader Joe in the Boston area. I love that store. They have a great Gravenstein applesauce that I use since my apple trees never give more more than enough for a couple of pies. I had a small harvest this week that included five eggs. My hens are laying again!

  19. michelle, usually I don't mind the snow as much, but since I got sick and my asthma has been acting up I can't go out to enjoy it. If I could ski I'd be in heaven.

Barbie, oh it is good. Easy to make too. Someday I ought to make my rosemary bread which is harder.

Mac, sadly the forecasts say about a foot now. Sigh.

Deb Fitz, new beds are so much fun to make. Lots of work, but fun nonetheless.

Melissa, lol right now it is buried so I can't even get to it. I hope to dig it out during the next thaw. Which might be in the spring.

Emily, Thanks. I love Amish Paste so much. I have exactly two seeds right now which just isn't enough for next year. I swear I saved some last year, but I can't find them anywhere.

Funkbuny, I can't wait until I have a real apple tree producing. It will be much better than buying from the farmers market. Easier to carry back too.

Lou, I saw that post. You are making me jealous. I love Trader Joes too. They have some good stuff in there when I don't make it myself.

  20. We finally have a Trader Joe's in RI. Alas, they discontinued my fav, vegetable tempura.

  21. We've been slowly eating up our stores too...although we have enough tomato sauce to last us into the summer.

This has indeed been quite a winter so far. I don't remember the last time it was this bad.

  22. Oh, I am sorry to see that this latest winter storm will give you significant snow. Luckily we may only see a few inches out of it, but we do have 2.5 feet on the ground right now.

We've been using our frozen veggies and still have some potatoes that we need to eat up soon

  23. I cook my apple sauce with the skins on too. Normally I'm using golden or red apples so it imports a beautiful rosy glow. No outdoor harvests here either.

  24. My tunnel is inside my glass greenhouse/chicken house. At night I throw quilts over the plastic. It has come thru the winter beautifully. We are eating kale, parsley, spinach, several types of lettuces, rosemary, and basking in the sun with the outdoors deep in snow. (St Martins, New Brunswick, Canada.)
