Harvest Monday, October 21st, 2013

The carrots are rolling in. I pick them whenever we run out in the house. Then I make them into carrot sticks so we always have something to munch on.

I picked the last of the winter squash. The second bed only had about 2/3rds what the first bed had. But a total of 50 pounds is pretty good for eating over the winter. Since my daughter is home I'll end up pureeing most of this. She likes her squash casserole. I make it about once a week for her. I also think it is about time for pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting. I'll probably make that when my MIL and son are in town at the beginning of November. Then I'll have lots of people to help me eat it.

Again I picked cucumbers. I still can't get over cucumbers in mid October. It is the last of them though as I pulled all the plants.

I did a small picking of the chard. I think I have one picking left before it gets pulled out. There is no sun at all on the bed anymore. So I doubt it will grow. It is just being held until I want more chard. But I'll pick it before the ground totally freezes up. That way I can clean the bed out before winter hits.

And I picked some more spinach. The spinach bed is really taking off. Since the spinach is in the circle garden it does get some sun during the day. And I covered it with netting fabric, so it was protected from the leaf miners (which really slow the plants down when they are small), but the netting lets a lot of light in compared to something like remay. Now if I can remember exactly what I did this year to repeat it next year. I like having fall spinach.

  2. Those carrots certainly do look mighty fine! I must try to emulate your success, because there are few nicer things than a fresh carrot stick.

  3. Wow, very impressive! My cucumbers are long-gone, and the fall carrots are still teeny.

  4. Isn't this the wackiest gardening year! Still no frost, not complaining, but we may get a few 20's night time temp. Your carrots are uniform. I too am impressed.

  7. Your spinach are amazing, each leaf looks perfect! I sowed some spinach too this autumn, but they didn't sprouted yet

  8. That first picture of your carrots looks like a bouquet! The spinach is doing so nicely. I am getting a little but mine is smaller! Nancy

  9. Great looking carrots!! Ours are behind this year so we may not get any until early spring. We struggle with leaf miners on our spinach too. What is this netting you use?

    1. It is from a fabric store. Like tulle but with a more coarse netting.

  10. Yes, a pretty impressive harvest for October 21 even if there's no sun and things have stopped growing!

  11. Amazing butternut squash! It's a veg that I love so I really should grow it (I tried once, unsuccessfully). I like to put chunks of butternut squash into a risotto with chicken strips and I also have a recipe for a slow cooker chicken and butternut squash - and it's wonderful roasted! The only thing that's left in my veg patch are winter veg (kale) and lots and lots of nasturtiums, plus the last of the raspberries. I think this weekend will be the big clear up!

  12. How do you support that tulle? Is it pegged into the ground, somehow?

    1. I use 9 gauge wire that is 6' long. And I use rebar to keep it down along the edges. I do have some u-pins (like tent stakes) that I occasionally use too.

  13. That's an impressive harvest of winter squash. I never did manage to get my fall sowing of spinach into the garden, it's still sitting in it's little paper pots, I've just not been able to do any digging lately.

  14. You are still getting cucumbers, I'm still picking summer squash. Quite a season. I've tried growing fall spinach and never had success. That is very nice spinach.

  15. Those are some gigantic spinach leaves to go with the rest of your wonderful late fall harvest! What variety is that? We just ate our last garden cucumber, found while we were pulling out the vines. Definitely time to prepare the beds for winter...

    1. It is Winter Giant (or Gigante d"inverno) and those leaves are small compared to what they will become in the spring. I've had them get as long as a foot.
