Harvest Monday, 2 June 2014

There were a lot of baskets of greens this week from lettuce and spinach to mizuna and bok choy. The nice head of Paris Island romaine and Fun Jen went to my townhouse mates. As did the first picking of Swiss chard and a lot of the mizuna. I had to pick the bok choy as it was starting to bolt. I think the tatsoi has to come out too. The direct seeded version of both are getting bigger which is good. I'm supposed to be planting my corn here by the end of the week. So if they aren't big enough by then, I'll be eating baby bok choy.

Though I have to say, I really like it big baby bok choy as it is perfect for grilling. I just cut it in half or quarters and throw a simple dressing on it. So tasty.

There were quite a few herbs in the harvest this week. The oregano has been dried. I have get to the other half of the patch and dry that this week.

And I picked the first batch of salad turnips. I say salad turnips, but half of them were eaten cooked - lightly sauteed in butter. Oh they were good. I wonder if they grill well. I might have to try that with the batch I'm going to pick this week.

And last but hardly least are the first two strawberries. Oh how I love strawberries.

  1. Wow, that is a lot of greens! All my Asian greens have bolted, spinach too. They were nice while they lasted. I need to try grilled bok choy. I've grilled almost every other vegetable, but not that one.

    1. If you do, just remember to cut off the top green part before you grill. Use that for something else. They just char badly if you leave them on.

  3. Those baby Turnips look really nice. I'm trying to grow some again. Last year was the first time I had any significant success with Turnips. They usually get riddled with maggots, such that they are mostly unuseable. I think starting to use nematodes must have made the difference, so I have just ordered some more. (Nematodes, I mean, not Turnips!).

  6. I haven't tried grilling whole bok choy, what would you call them, bulbs or heads or what? I do like to slice them up and stir fry them in a grill basket, that way I can toss in the green parts at the end.

I so want to try some baby turnips, I almost sowed some yesterday but ran out of space after sowing a bunch of other things.

    1. I always call them heads. And I wish I had a grill basket because that sounds like a great way to grill them. I do have a flat grill tray that I stir fry things on occasionally but it doesn't have sides (except at the back) and things fall out way too easily.

  12. You have me beat in the Asian greens department. haha. And you're also making me regret not sowing Asian turnips this spring. I love them sauteed in butter as well.

  16. Late to the this week's party, was busy learning more about herbs... Feeling seriously jealous of your salad turnips, which have been ridiculously scarce this year, even at the farmers' market!
