Harvest Monday, 22 December 2014

If only I had a harvest from the garden. But I don't. Interestingly enough it has been fairly warm. The soil has frozen, but every time it does it thaws out again. This week we aren't even supposed to get below freezing at all. So it is looking to be a warmer than average December here. If only the garden got sun at this time of the year, I could do a low hoop house. But sadly the neighboring houses block the light. But maybe next year I'll plant up the zinnia patch by the driveway in something edible for harvesting in December. I just hate ripping out the zinnias while they are still blooming.

Though I've got no harvests I still have lots of stores. This week I used my one solitary celeriac up. I made a roasted parsnip and celeriac soup. It looked like boring brown mush, but it was delicious. Maybe next time I should add some carrots to give it more of a color.

Some lunches only have carrots from the garden. The rest were bought from the store. I've decided that my dinners will be from the stores for a long time, but for my lunches I can buy whatever I want to add to my carrots. If I use my stores for both meals my garden fare won't last long. So I'll mix it up a bit.

Harvest Monday is a day to show off your harvests, how you are saving your harvest, or how you are using your harvest. If you have a harvest you want to show off, add your name and link to Mr Linky below.

  1. It's been warmer than average here too in December. But not very sunny. What things I do have planted outside are growing slowly, though it's faster in the greenhouse. It's hard when you have shady spots though.

  2. How interesting, it's been warmer than usual here too. I've been cutting down green rather than frost nipped brown summer plants. It's tough to cut down pepper plants when they are covered with blossoms. My December harvests have been a bit more varied than usual.

  3. How nice it must be to have food from your garden to eat in the winter! We never have enough. With three ravenous children, I would need a much larger yard; although, there is still room to improve in the production department for our current situation.

  4. Very tough choice, zinnias (food for the soul) and food. I tend to let my zinnias hang on with the plants looking terrible even though they produce near perfect flowers.

  5. Other than a little lettuce that we harvest once a week we are down to eating from our stores too! We will have a few carrots to harvest from the winter beds starting next month and maybe some spinach!!

  6. Hi! You sure do come up with interesting meals! And using some of your own preserves. I would have a hard time tearing out the zinnias too but maybe a little patch of every other spot so you will have fresh food too? Nancy

  7. The parsnip and celeriac soup looks perfect to me (most of my soups look like that) I can just imagine the lovely flavours. Hope you have a great week.

  8. It's great that Harvest Monday is still attracting input even in Christmas week! Thanks for keeping it going. I think your plan to eke out your store of fresh ingredients is probably the right one, from the psychological point of view.

  9. Those carrots sure look nice. I still have some stored from my summer harvest, but for some reason, I think that one variety has developed a distinctly bland flavour. I'll have to do a side by side test.

It's been so busy this week (we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve) that I didn't even realize I missed Harvest Monday until today! No harvests for me for this past HM but I may do a wee post on a wee harvest from yesterday next HM. Merry Christmas, Daphne!
