Yesterday people complained that my ugly wasn't really ugly enough. I'm trying again today. I looked under the row cover to harvest today and found one of my broccoli plants looking horrible. Root maggots maybe? I do have them under a row cover, but a nasty fly could have gotten in. Is that ugly enough for you? I know it still isn't quite up to Annie's Granny's standard of ugly, but it is a plant that is on its way out and he looks so sad next to my nice looking broccoli plant. And I warn you if you tell me it isn't ugly enough, I'm going to start showing photos of my squished cutworms to you. You really don't want that.
And just so I don't leave you with such sadness, I'm showing you the thing that made me jump up and down in the garden today - for joy that is. MY POTATOES ARE UP! Go Potatoes Go! I can't wait to get my first potato harvest. I really have a feeling that I've grown them in the past, but since I don't remember, I'm calling it the first time I've grown them. I can't wait until it is time to start hilling them up.
Yes, Granny's ugly is still uglier. In fact, it's completely dead now. But wait until you see my potatoes!! Mwahaha.
ReplyDeleteOh I dunno, one of the leaves still looks okay, so I can't say it's the ugliest I've seen. How about broccoli completely infested with black aphids? Now THAT'S ugly!
ReplyDeletePS Congrats on the potatoes, they look great! After all your work to locate them, I hope you get a great harvest.
ReplyDeletePotatoes do look great!
ReplyDeleteSorry about your broccoli. It seems a lot of bloggers that I read are having trouble with root maggots and their broccoli this year. Good luck with yours. I hope that little one makes it!
I'm rooting (so to speak) for that broccoli, Daphne! I think it can still make it! (And I agree with Karen, brocooli covered with black aphids would be way more hofrrible. But please don't show us those squished cutworms. Eeeewww!!!!) Your potatoes look great! I've been so excited to see the shoots of mine pushing determinedly up through their straw "hat"! I just hope they have enough stamina to make it all the way up into the sun!
ReplyDeleteAnnie's Granny, well I knew you had me beat in the ugly category. Now I'm going to lose in the potato category too? Shucks.
ReplyDeleteKaren, that would be ugly. I haven't seen any aphids yet in the garden. Last year they never got bad. I hope it stays that way. I don't want to be showing you a photo of my nice broccoli infested.
DP Nguyen, tis that time of the year for root maggots. I'm contemplating if I should pull it out and replace it with radishes. I could always use some more radishes. I might leave it in and hope.
our friend Ben, I don't know, y'all are telling me I'm not doing ugly well enough. I might do some squished slug photos if you can't handle the cutworms ;>
Your broccoli does look just like mine. I had this happen last year to one or two of the plants. I'm not too concern because the rest of the plants are big enough that they should be able to withstand the little buggers. Nice to see the spuds!
ReplyDeleteDan, My others will be fine too. They only seem to die a horrible death if they catch those maggots young.
