Harvest Monday - 14 June 2010

Well you were probably all wonder where Harvest Monday got to early this morning. Well I was here. My power was not. I've had the electricians in and they were redoing the power in the office this morning.

But I'm happy to say it was a good harvest week. I only went to the old garden once, but I picked a full basket. I think next week I'll have to bring a cooler to hold things. Some of the leaves got too wilted and I had to throw them out before weighing. To get others crisped up again I put them in a dishpan with water in the bottom and recut their stems just like they were flowers in a vase. Most perked right up.

So what was harvested? Chard for one. I'm growing both Ruby chard and Argentata chard at the old garden. The Argentata chard is much larger than the Ruby right now. Supposedly it has a less oxalic taste to it, but I had too much to eat this week, so just chose to blanch and freeze it all. I'll get to do a taste test later.

I also had lots of lettuce, snow peas, snap peas, a nice head of Yakatta-na, lots of Komatsuna and Senposai, and one little stalk of Chinese broccoli. Overall a really good week. If only I hadn't forgotten to pick the garlic scapes.

One of my surprise harvests was a single salad turnip. I thought I had planted the seed to late too really get anything at all - especially with the heat we had. But I was mistaken. I got at least one tasty turnip.

  • Green 5.08 lbs
  • Peas 0.88 lbs
  • Turnips 0.02 lbs
  • Spent this week: 0
  • Total harvested this week 5.97 lbs
  • Total for the year 16.16
  • Total dollars -212.49

Harvest Monday is a day to show off your harvests, how you are saving your harvest, or how you are using your harvest. If you have a harvest you want to show off, add your name and link to Mr Linky below.

  1. Look at all of that chard! I'm starting to freeze some of my greens as well. Hopefully the number of pounds we harvest each week will increase exponentially as the summer progresses. I'm ready for double digits at this point.

  2. That's a big harvest for going to the garden one time!

  3. Hmm, I wasn't wondering where Harvest Monday was, I was still sound asleep, one advantage to being 3 time zones away.

That's a really nice harvest. It's great that you're able to start restocking the freezer.

  5. Glad things are ok, just dark. Your garden is looking good!

With our weird spring, I didn't get any salad turnips and only a few radishes before they bolted. Oh well. Loved your comments on the Senposai, Fun Jen, Komatsuna and Yakatta-Na. I will be adding some of those to my chicken row for sure. I hope to get that planted this week, but we'll see.

  6. I HAVE POTATOES!!! (ok, not very many, as I note in the entry, but some!!!) Also a few more snow peas, 1 tiny onion, and some basil. That turnip looks great! I have some chard to harvest too, but nowhere near as much as you! Happy Harvest Monday to all!

  8. Michelle (above) said exactly what I was going to say! I just woke up, so you hadn't gone missing for me ;-)

You're the third person I've read this week that got just one turnip!

Sure wish I could freeze lettuce for future use.

  9. Beautiful chard harvest.
I'll have to wait for a while for my chard to grow up, I planted them too late, I probably don't get to try them until fall.

  10. The thing I love most about Harvest Mondays is looking at what everyone else grows. You all grow such interesting things in comparison to me and my standards. It's nice to dream!

  11. Congratulations on your harvest, you are getting so many greens now. The chard looks great!

This one turnip is beautiful, what a striking photo! Better one turnip than none, I also had a very small turnip harvest this year...

  12. Enough lettuce for 1 salad, a tiny bit of basil, and some spearmint for me. Starting small, but loving every chance I have to harvest from my own garden!

  13. Beautiful chard! Mine is still too small for a harvest.

  14. Can you believe this is my first year growing Swiss Chard? For some reason, I didn't think I would like it and never considered it until I started reading about it on blogs. I found I absolutely love it!! I am glad to know that it can be blanched and frozen too.

  15. I was wondering where you were this morning. However, I'm leaving for work extra early these days and have my posts done the day before. Only one more week of a long commute, then school's out!

I'm excited to follow your lead and blanch and freeze swiss chard. We use it in most things in place of spinach. Tonight it was in a soup. I even said to my husband that maybe I need to put some more chard in so we can freeze it.
Last week was mostly lettuce for us.

  16. P.S. Daphne, how many Swiss chard plants do you have?

  17. Chard is long gone with the heat here, and I miss it, but I am happy to see blushes of color on tomato cheeks!

What did you do with your tasty turnip?

  18. Must be a bad year for turnips. The bugs got the leaves and the bottoms didn't grow. Thank goodness for lettuce.

I've never heard of salad turnips. They've very pretty.

  19. Chard looks good! Mine is full of leaf miner as usual. I really need to fallow your advise and kill the eggs :-)

  21. That was a superior weekly harvest for only one trip to the old garden! Wowwwee!

I really have got to get my act together and participate in the harvest Monday posts. I am usually hot footing it out early to work on Monday and can't manage to get prepared the night before to do it ... but I resolve to try and figure out a method to do this somehow as it is always so enjoyable to see everyone's harvests.

  22. Nice turnip! Do you remember when you planted the seed?

  23. Christina, I sliced the turnip into my salad that day. It was delicious.

Jackie, hmm I planted them April 20th. I think they should have been planted at the beginning of April.

  24. Emily, hmm I have a section that is 2'x3' I think. I'm not sure how many plants that is. I think I have 13 but not absolute certain.

  25. Yummy! Beautiful greens! It must be hard to go back and forth between your two gardens but what a bounty!

  26. Chard is certainly prolific I just wished I new what to do with it. Great harvest.
