It's Alive!

Yes I did a walk through of the garden this morning. Everything seemed to have survived the heat. The brassicas that were planted last week wilted amazingly in the heat. I watered everything during the height of the heat in hopes it would cool them off. The Asian greens lost their bottom leaves. They just shriveled up. But the rest of the plants still seem healthy.

We got to 92.6F yesterday. The calendar claims it is April, but I swear it is July right now. In an average year we only get 13 days over 90F all year long. I've seen a 90 degree day before at the very end of May, but never this time of the year. But the 92 was at my house. I have a weather station. I'm a gardening nerd. I love statistics. I don't think Boston got that high, but haven't checked it out.

Tomorrow the heat breaks and we are back to being just a little above normal. That will be nice for the plants. Then I can get the lettuce planted.

  1. My gracious! Over 90 is summer temps, even for Mobile, Alabama. We would be surprised at 90 in April, even here. That's hot.

  2. We have only been in the 80's but it is still way to hot for this time of the year. Hopefully your cooler weather will get there soon.

  3. Love those orange and yellow daffys! This weather is crazy! Fortunately, while it was very warm here, we didn't see 90s. The forecast today is calling for upper 70s. We are on vacation so I am enjoying the opportunity to be outside in short sleeves, capri pants and Keen sandals!

I'm glad your seedlings made it through the heat.

  4. The weather here has been weird also, although in the opposite direction. This weekend I slogged through snow on a hike to the top of a local peak. It has been cooler than average and we've been catching up on rain after a dry winter. Yesterday we finally had a warm day that topped out at 71°F. Your daffodils are so pretty. It's good to hear that the veggies made it through ok.

  5. Weren't there many heat waves last year? I think I remember my in laws complaining, and they live in PA. It's those big, nasty climate chickens coming home to roost. The daffodils look spectacular! I really miss huge swathes of them. They look great and I'm so happy to hear that your greens sweated it through.

    1. Oh we often get heat waves in the summer. Last year wasn't too bad. The year before was record breaking heat. But we don't get them in April like this. We are talking over 30 degrees above normal.

  6. We hit 95 yesterday!! It's nice out today though. I just went out and did a little harvesting. All of the overwintered Spinach, Kale & Collards have bolted except for the Squire Kale. The spring planted collards and kale seem to be fine. I haven't planted out the spring spinach seedlings yet. So hopefully we will get another crop of spinach.

  7. We also had weird hot weather these few days. Feel like summer when we are deep into autumn. Here when day is too hot especially when it is clear sky on warm season, it is not recommended to water the plants middle of the day because the soil is hot and will effect the root.Mulching helps to cool the soil.

  8. Oh I wanted to say your daffodils are so cheerful.

  9. We lost an entire row of lettuce that had just sprouted. It literally shriveled up and turned brown like crumbling dry leaves. Too bad!

  10. The weather has be strange for a while. I am sure we will be told why eventually. There has been nothing normal about it.

  11. We are having a really warm April too - not hot but well above April averages. Actually its been lovely - mid 20s for the last few weeks. Apparently its supposed to go back to normal for us too next week but I have to say I'll miss the warmth.

  12. I've had no damage from the heat. My peas are suffering from daytime temps in the 70's and then light frost in the morning. The tips of my 'Blizzard' snow peas look burned, I'm hoping that this will just make them bushier.

  13. 92 is just crazy weather! The flowers and garden look beautiful though despite the roller coaster ride (weather wise) you have been on.

  14. I half expected those cheerful daffodils to start singing, they look so alive! Glad to hear your garden survived the heat...

  15. It's crazy weather. At least we're back to more normal temps now. I'm watering all the time it seems. Hopefully we'll get some rain this weekend.
