Harvest Monday - August 15 2011

The beginning of the week had some nice harvests. Monday was raining hard. We had three inches of rain over three days. This caused my melons to split. But just because they split doesn't mean they don't get eaten. Some of the melons were divine. Some just OK. And don't think these are big melons. They aren't. For me they ran about two pounds each which is a perfect size if you don't have a family eating them.

Tuesday was my big harvest day. The first harvest wasn't even photographed. I totally forgot. It had peppers, broccoli, and kohlrabi. The second was a nice diversified basket.

Then I pulled out most of my tomato plants as they had finished producing. But first was the harvest of the tomatoes.

And weirdly of the carrots too. I had a line of carrots in the middle of the tomato plants. I had to pull them all as the spinach was getting planted there. They had good sun early in the spring but were still small when the tomatoes were planted. After that the tomatoes took over and they had no sun at all. But they still put on some roots. I was surprised they did as well as they did.

Wednesday had a nice little harvest. Very little.

But Wednesday didn't stop there. Most of my onions were dry enough to braid. They they are finally weighed.

Then my garlic was taken out of the shed as it was dry. I cleaned it up and weighed it.

Thursday my asthma really kicked in. I quit gardening except for the real necessity of what needed to be picked. Which was basically beans and cukes on Friday. I even gave away the tomatoes you see in the above basket as I didn't have the energy to can any more. And yes I am getting better now. Filtered air, lots of drugs, and lots of rest. I miss my garden.

And again on Sunday. I should have picked my tomatoes on Sunday too as today the rain is again pouring. I wonder how many will crack with all this rain. Most of the tomatoes left in the garden are Market Miracle and Amish Paste and both aren't big crackers. The one Cherokee Purple sadly is. I'll have to cut parts out before I weigh this week.

And speaking of this week. I'll be traveling and may or may not have internet service. I might be able to get to all your posts, but probably not. I'll pre-schedule next Monday's post so you all can have fun without me. My garden will be taken care of. My townhouse mates will be here. I'll see if I can get them to harvest it all and weigh it. I hope so. But next Monday won't have many photos.

  • Alliums 24.11 lbs
  • Beans 1.66 lbs
  • Broccoli 0.80 lbs
  • Corn 2.61 lbs
  • Cucurbits 17.77 lbs
  • Pepper 0.64 lbs
  • Tomato 20.47 lbs
  • Weekly Total 70.04 lbs
  • Weekly Spent $0
  • Yearly Total 387.07 lbs
  • Veggie Garden was worth $699.58
  • Fruit 1.69 lbs

  3. Those carrots did quite well in spite of the lack of sunshine later on.

Have a nice week away from the garden!!!

  4. Sorry about your asthma...fall is on the way! I hope that season is better for you. Nice harvest! I would have killed for that basket of tomatos!

  5. Sorry about the cracking of the melons and the asthma :( At least you were able to enjoy one of the two. Like Allison said, hopefully Fall will be better for you.

    Great looking harvest, this week!

  6. I like the size of your melon. Its perfect and nothing wasted, don't have to worry about left-overs. You have beautiful allium harvest there! Hope you feel much better. Hope you have so much fun travelling.

  7. Those melons look absolutely delicious. Cracking just forces you to eat them faster. ;D

The harvest week was a really good one for you. The finished onions and garlic look superior and your clean out of the tomatoes provided a really nice harvest too. Sorry you were not feeling well enough to deal with them, but at least you put them to good use by placing them in the hands of someone else. Enjoy your time away!

  8. Sorry you had a bit of a rough week! Your harvests look amazing! What I wouldn't do for just one of those cracked melons on my plate! I planted my carrots with the tomatoes, too and are seeing similar results...a nice size, but nothing too exciting :-) Enjoy your trip! Safe travels!

  13. Wow your tomatoes are done and the ones in my garden are just beginning to set nicely. Of course I usually end up picking them green before the first frost and have to let them ripen in the house.

What a great week you had.

  14. Wow, what an amazing harvest! You should feel great and enjoy your well earned break. With our cold weather, the harvests are just starting in the Pacific Northwest. Lots to come still.

  15. You really do have a nice variety of vegetables coming out of the garden. That is a shame about your melons cracking, but at least they were mostly ripe enough to enjoy. Hope you feel better and have a great trip.

  16. Beautiful harvest again! My melons did not do well at all this year. They have yet to set fruit even. Boo! I hope your asthma improves. Until then, take care of yourself!!

  17. Looking good, looks like you'll have enough food for the winter

  18. Hey, slow down! You're not supposed to be harvesting 3x what I'm getting! LOL, my lightweight lettuce and strawberries haven't a chance against your cucumbers and melons. It all looks good, especially that corn that's hiding in the bottom of the basket.

  19. An amazing harvest. I have to keep reminding myself your garden is 3 times the size of mine and Arlington is probably 2 weeks ahead of Bolton. Still, I am amazed at your energy and green thumb.

Hope your asthma gets better. The weather has been wicked humid and there is mildew everywhere in the garden. Enjoy your trip! Somewhere dry I hope.

  21. Fabulous, as always! How do you store your garlic heads? We are collecting quite a number from our CSA and I'm not sure how to keep them best.

And I love your onion braids!

  22. I would never turn down a melon like that because it had a crack. In fact it would be a good excuse to eat another one!

  23. Beautiful harvests ... as usual. I'm planting more garlic soon!Yours looks great! Enjoy some time for yourself.

I had a nice harvest this week and have posted a photo and a recipe for Rabbit with Tomatoes and Black Olives using herbs from my garden ... Enjoy!

  24. Can I comment once again that I love those melons. Mine are not quite done yet but I keep hovering over them so some day soon they'll get the message.

  25. Great Harvest! I am glad that you still ate those melons! Enjoy your time away!!

  26. Wow, your vegetables are beautiful! I, as a first-time gardener, just harvested some carrots yesterday (a much smaller bunch than yours I must say though), but I can certainly understand the pride you must feel harvesting so much great stuff.

    Cheers and happy growing! :)

  27. Beautiful carrots! Hope you're feeling better. Your produce is so good this year! How many melon plants do you have? They're certainly producing for you. Mine are not ripe yet(:

  28. Hope you're feeling better.
Those carrots look beautiful, I had a cracked watermelon instead of melons.

  31. Everything looks great as usual, including those melons. I may try growing them again now that I know that they can still be eaten after they have split.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh Daphne, I'm bit jealous as we have tried and tried to grow melons but we just don't have the season for them. Split or not...lucky you. Nice garlic!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Another amazing week for you! I love how you really get the most out of your garden!

  34. Beautiful garlic. Your garden variety is inspiring!

  35. Your harvest this week is excellent...my mouth is watering! Happy harvest!

  36. Those carrots did amazing for not being the main feature of that area. One of my goals next year is to sneak more random plantings where ever I can. Hopefully we get some nice surprises like that.

Also, I'm 42 in the Mr.Linky! Woo hoo!

  37. Last and among the least, but at least I'm posting my harvest. So sorry that your asthma is acting up. And sorry too that your melons split. But at two pounds, I'll bet they're bigger than my watermelons. They're the size of oranges and grapefruits and don't seem to be getting any bigger. My community garden produces dwarf everything. Gotta adjust that soil. Your hard-neck garlics are gorgeous. My hard-neck garlic crop failed, but the California giants are coming along nicely.

  38. Wow, your onions and garlic look amazing! I love how diverse your harvest is.

  39. I didn't grow melons this year and after seeing your harvest pics, I miss them splits and all.

Your garlic cleaned up very well. Mine wasn't drying very well in the shed because of the humid and rainy weather, so I moved them to the attic of the house.

    Enjoy your travels this week!

  40. Tried to comment at the beginning of the week and couldn't due to my stupid computer :) anyhow - Melons! Wow so jealous!

  41. Oh crud... asthma sucks!

Your harvest is incredible! Did you grow hard neck garlic? (I'm trying to figure out why you braided onions, but not garlic.)
