I Have Babies

Whoohoo. The first pepper finally set. I had a couple blooms fall off in the past. This is my cayenne plant. The serranos are in full bloom, but the jalapenos haven't bloomed yet. Maybe soon.

Well the photo is just about as bad as you can get, but this is one of Alice's little babies. Emma has also set. The others will follow soon I'm sure. I think the tomatillos have also set, but they have little husks so you can't peek inside.

  1. My first baby tomato appeared yesterday, too! On one of the plants I thought was a goner, but now it's big and healthy and having babies! No peppers for me yet, but I pulled three baby carrots and picked a full half-pound of sugar snap peas this morning.

  2. What lovely babies! I noticed that some of my pepper and tomato plants have buds.

  3. Annie's Granny, Don't you love how tomatoes can outgrow early issues? Seedlings that look so bad can recover quickly in the ground. Yum baby carrots. I take one out about every three days. The last one was about 1/4" in diameter. I ate it but there wasn't much to it yet. Soon.

Michelle, congrats on your buds. Hopefully you will have babies soon too.

    Stewart, thanks.

  4. Woo hoo! I'm jealous!

I'm still cutting the blooms off all my pepper plants. They are too puny for anything at this point other than growing more leaves. I need it to warm up!

  5. Nice pepper Daphne. So if the hot peppers crosses with the sweet pepper will they then be hot?

  6. Aw I'm so jealous of your peppers. Mine died off when they were still seedlings :( I hear they're hard to grow here in the northwest but I wish I had the chance to try. Maybe next year!

  7. Wow! And healthy too- very healthy, Daphne. I need to go get a pepper plant this year, I didn't start any :(

  8. Stacy, this year my peppers went crazy and are huge (well compared to the puny things they normally are). Now if only I can recreate it next year. Even after gardening for so long, I still don't know why some years they do well and some years they struggle.

Dan, yup. Well I guess it depends upon what you mean. This year they will be fine. But if you save the seed, next year any that crossed will be hot since the trait is dominant. Peppers often cross if not isolated so more than half will be hot.

Cynthia, I find them hard in the NE too. Our cool wet climate is not great for peppers. I gave up on the sweet peppers years ago. They never grow to a full size pepper muc less the red ripe ones I like, but the chilies will grow for me. They don't get huge like in warmer climes, but I get a harvest so I keep growing them. This year I may actually get a good harvest. I'll be shocked if I do, but stranger things have happened.

DirtDigger, oh how sad. But I'm sure you can find what you need at the garden center. I want to make salsa this year. Since in the past peppers haven't produced much, I planted a ton of them Ok I planted 12.

    Tyra, thanks.

  11. I guess it does make sense that the smaller peppers grow better in the short summers we have. Maybe I'll try some chilies next year! I hope it works!

  12. Congrats on your first peppers! That is exciting stuff. I have a baby bell pepper that is slowly getting bigger everyday. :)

  13. Worms and Flowers, I should be doing an update every two weeks. I've been remiss.

Chiot's Run, I'm thinking the tomato and pepper will still be a while before they are ripe, but my peas. I have babies on those now too. Those should be much faster.

Cynthia, my mother always grew chilies too. They could produce there and that is in the Colorado mountains probably zone 4. It gets hot during the day there, but the nights can get really chilly. The frost free growing season is really short. They never got planted before June. I still remember the 3' snow storm at the end of May one year. Luckily for her she finally got a greenhouse.

perennialgardener, Thanks. Oh a baby bell. I wish I could grow those here. I love red and yellow bells.
